Messy and Material: Listening Laboratory is a research event located somewhere between an experiential group, a live score, and a performance. Drawing from interdisciplinary methods and a multimodal conception of ‘listening’, artist Lisa Skuret will install a speculative laboratory within the ICA building in London. Spaces are limited and visitors are requested to bring their bodies and collective ears.

A specially commissioned publication will accompany the project.

This performance has been generously supported by the Arts Council England.

Messy and Material was commissioned as part of fig-2 at Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London.
Fig-2 (2015) is a revival of the 2000 exhibition cycle fig-1, which was developed by Mark Francis and Jay Jopling. Fig-1 featured a series of experimental projects, each programmed only a few weeks in advance, and included artists ranging from Jeremy Deller and Richard Hamilton to Will Self and Patti Smith. As the project’s name suggests, its remit is to act as a notional plumb line demonstrating the depth and range of creativity in London at a notionally significant point in time.
